Why should I walk Backwards?
Admin • Apr 23, 2023

It seems as though we hear about this frequently these days, so we thought we would bring some valuable information regarding his topic here at Science Based Wellness & Chiropractic.

We believe in the healthiest exercise and this one is at the top of our list this month!

We have to get obvious question out of the way: “why would you walk backwards?” After all, we are designed or conditioned to walk forward. That said, as it turns out, we may be missing some of the most unexpected benefits of walking backwards.

walking backwards. Ainsworth BE, Haskell WL, Herrmann SD, et al. 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities: a second update of codes and MET values. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2011;43(8):1575–81. doi:10.1249/MSS.0b013e31821ece12

Here are some of the benefits of walking backwards:

  • Increases Knee Range of Motion
  • Improves Quadriceps Function
  • Improves Hamstring Flexibility
  • Improves Balance, Gait, and Mobility
  • Improves Heart and Lung Function
  • Burns More Calories

Walking backwards can bring the feet back to life once again! You must land on your toes, then the ball of the foot, and roll to the heel. When doing this gently, with “soft knees” this feels amazing. This method allows you to fully control the roll of your foot from toes to heel, mobilizing the entire foot and improving ankle flexion.

Walking backwards is also an amazing mind “reset”. It allows you to move better, walk better and feel better! Just the physical benefits alone make it worth a try. It improves the brain, which can help your thoughts and your emotions and this motion can also help you walk forward through life better.

We recommend starting slowly, about 500 feet a day, up to about 1000 steps going backward and forward to get a great new way to stay strong and healthy!

Until next time, stay healthy!
